The Story of Marafa – Hell's Kitchen

Marafa Depression, locally known as "Nyari" or "Hell's Kitchen", is a spectacular sandstone gorge carved by centuries of water and wind erosion. The name "Hell's Kitchen" comes from the intense heat that rises from the rocks during the day – it can feel like walking into an oven.

For the local Mijikenda people, Marafa is a sacred site. Legend says a wealthy, arrogant family was cursed and turned into stone for their greed – the rock formations are said to be the petrified remains of their home and possessions.
