Diani Beach FAQs

Is Diani Beach or Watamu better for a luxury holiday?
Both are excellent, but they offer different experiences. Diani is livelier with more dining options, beachfront cafes, and water sports operators. Watamu is quieter, more exclusive, and protected as a marine park — better for couples, honeymooners, and travellers who want an unhurried, upscale atmosphere. Watamu is also much closer to Tsavo East for a safari add-on.
How do I get to Diani Beach?
The easiest route is to fly into Mombasa MBA then transfer south (45 min). Better still, fly directly into Ukunda Airstrip (UKA) — right next to Diani — to avoid the Likoni Ferry crossing entirely. Safarilink and AirKenya operate flights from Nairobi Wilson Airport to Ukunda.
What water sports and adventures are available at Diani?
Diani is famous for kite surfing (one of Africa's top kite spots), scuba diving, deep-sea fishing, snorkeling, windsurfing, and glass-bottom boat trips. Most resorts can arrange these. The best kite surfing window is June–September when trade winds are strongest.
What is the best time to visit Diani Beach?
December to March (short dry season) and June to October (long dry season) are the best times. Peak beach season is December to February when European visitors are most common. Avoid April to June, which is the main rainy season.
What is there to do in Diani besides the beach?
The Colobus Conservation project, Shimba Hills National Reserve (elephants and rare sable antelope), Funzi Island day trips by boat, Ali Barbour's Cave Restaurant, and Diani's variety of beachfront cafes and water sports make for a full itinerary beyond the beach itself.
