Kenya eTA Guide 2026

Electronic Travel Authorisation – what every traveller needs to know before flying to Kenya

⚠️ Important – eTA is NOT a visa
The eTA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) simply allows you to board the flight to Kenya. Your actual 90‑day stay permission is granted free of charge by immigration officers at the airport upon arrival. The only fee you pay is the eTA application fee.

What is the Kenya eTA?

The Kenya Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) is a mandatory online authorisation for most nationalities travelling to Kenya for tourism, business, or transit. It replaced the previous “visa on arrival” system in 2024. You must apply online before your flight – there is no visa on arrival anymore.

How much does it cost?

The eTA fee is $32.50 USD (approximately €30). This is the only fee you pay. Your 90‑day stay stamp at the airport is completely free.

How long is it valid?

The eTA is valid for a single entry and allows you to stay in Kenya for up to 90 days from the date of arrival. You must enter Kenya before the eTA expires (usually within 30 days of approval).

How to apply – step by step

  1. Visit the official government website: etakenya.go.ke (only use this site – avoid third‑party agents).
  2. Fill in the online application form (passport details, travel dates, accommodation).
  3. Pay the $32.50 fee using a credit or debit card.
  4. Receive approval by email within 2‑5 business days (often sooner).
  5. Print the eTA approval or save it on your phone – you will need to show it at check‑in and upon arrival.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an eTA if I’m only transiting through Kenya?
Yes – if you leave the airport transit area or stay overnight, you require an eTA. For same‑plane connections without leaving the transit zone, check with your airline.
How long does approval take?
Typically 2‑5 business days. Apply at least one week before your flight to avoid delays.
Can I extend my stay beyond 90 days?
Yes – you can apply for a visa extension at the immigration headquarters in Nairobi. Overstaying without permission incurs fines.
Is the eTA the same as a visa?
No. The eTA is an authorisation to travel. Your actual stay permission (90 days) is given free at the airport upon arrival. You will receive a stamp in your passport with the allowed duration.
📌 Important reminder: Always use the official government website – etakenya.go.ke. There are many third‑party sites that charge extra fees. The official fee is only $32.50.
